Conference tournament week is always a whirlwind. But 2026 has been particularly chaotic.
The Big 12 Tournament produced a statement win from Iowa State, which beat Texas Tech to advance and solidify its spot on the 2-seed line. The Cyclones entered the week as a borderline 2/3-seed. A few more wins in Kansas City could push them firmly into the top eight.
Arizona, the Big 12 regular season champion, beat UCF in its tournament opener and is positioned to face Iowa State with a conference title on the line. A head-to-head win would strengthen Arizona's case for the No. 1 overall seed.
In the Big Ten, Michigan cruised through its early-round games, reinforcing its 1-seed credentials. But the more interesting stories are lower on the bracket. Ohio State went on a four-game winning streak to close the regular season, beating Purdue, Indiana, and Iowa along the way. That run put them back on the bubble after months of uncertainty. A quarterfinal loss to Michigan ended the Buckeyes' run, but their late-season surge may have been enough to impress the committee.
UCLA picked up momentum with a Thursday win over Rutgers in the Big Ten Tournament, pushing their at-large probability above 95%. The Bruins had dropped into the 60% range earlier in the season before winning four of their last five regular-season games.
The ACC Tournament has been relatively orderly. Duke survived a close opener against Florida State and remains the projected No. 1 overall seed. Virginia, Louisville, and North Carolina are all safely in the field. NC State sits in the "almost there" category - not quite a lock, but close enough that most models give them a strong chance of getting the call on Sunday.
Mid-major conference tournaments are delivering the auto-bid steals that always complicate the bubble. Every unexpected champion from a one-bid league takes an at-large spot off the table. For teams like SMU, VCU, and Auburn, each bid steal makes their math harder.
The committee will start its final deliberations on Friday. By Sunday evening at 6 PM Eastern, the bracket will be public and 68 teams will know where they stand. Between now and then, every game matters.
In short: Conference tournament results are reshaping the 2026 bracket in real time. Iowa State strengthened its 2-seed case, Ohio State made a late bubble push, and mid-major auto-bid steals are squeezing at-large hopefuls. Selection Sunday is March 15.
